Foo Dogs, as they are commonly referred to in the West, are actually depicting lions that typically stand guard in front of Chinese Imperial palaces and Imperial tombs. They are usually depicted in pairs consisting of a male leaning his paw upon an embroidered ball and a female restraining a playful cub.
